Randolph Horn, a Samford professor, conducted the poll and he told the audience of several hundred of the state's leading business and political leaders that the strong support for regulating and taxing gambling was found in all subgroups surveyed. 4-17 with a scientific sample of 529 respondents, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percent. Bob Riley's Task Force on Illegal Gambling has stepped up efforts to shut down casinos that Riley contends have illegal bingo machines. Gambling, specifically electronic bingo, has become the dominant issue in recent weeks across the state as Gov. The poll, conducted by the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama based at Samford University, was discussed at today's PARCA meeting in Birmingham. Alabamians by a substantial margin support regulating and taxing gambling in the state while only about a quarter said they support outlawing gambling altogether.
